A moody evening scene lit by auroras overhead. Sculpted and photoscanned assets were used for the foreground, while the cabin was poly-modelled in Blender. For the mountain in the background, an a photo on an emissive texture plane allowed for a cheap facsimile of global illumination and allowed it to be incorporated into the atmosphere lighting.

The cabin, the foreground and the mountain plane were rendered in real-time in Unreal Engine, while the auroras were rendered in Blender and comped on top.

In this case the auroras were not merely texture cards, but fully three-dimensional emissive volumes, created entirely using procedural textures within Blender. For the foreground, the gradient of the auroras was projected into an emissive plane in order to cast correct lighting on the assets below.
